Plate II — In the field
Nolan Fernandez
Microbiologist · Vector-borne disease researcher · Children's author
Nolan Fernandez is a research scientist with a Master's degree in microbiology and over 10 years of experience in field biology, infectious disease, and vector control. His work has focused on the diseases carried by ticks and other vector-borne pathogens, and he has helped build one of North America's largest arachnid-borne pathogen surveillance platforms — now used for both scientific research and public health safety awareness.
Raised in Great Barrington, Massachusetts — in the heart of tick country — Nolan has spent his career turning field research into practical knowledge that keeps families safer. As a parent himself, he saw firsthand how little children understand about ticks, and how much a simple habit like a tick check can matter. That's what led him to write The Tickly Tick: a story that teaches kids the same protection his research has spent years studying.
With more books on the way, Nolan continues to bridge serious science and everyday family life — one story at a time.
"The best defense against Lyme disease isn't fear — it's a habit. If a picture book can make a kid remember to do a tick check, then science and story just did something powerful together."
